We have a big bonus room up above our two car garage. It was really one of the selling points for our house. We really liked the fact that we had all of this extra space to use up there for storage and to make into a guest area. We end up having a lot of out of town visitors, since my family is very large and they all live about four hours away from us. I knew that a lot of my sisters and cousins would want to come for visits from time to time, and so the bonus room was really nice for us to have. The only problem with the bonus room was the fact that when the contractors built the garage, they didn’t install a good heating and air conditioning system or even air ducts in the garage or in the bonus room. The bonus room didn’t even have air ducts or heating ducts in the floors or in the ceilings! So as you can probably imagine, the temperature got way overheated up there in the summer and then in the winter when it was cold outside, the bonus room was absolutely freezing! So finally after my younger sister had to stay in the bonus room with only an electric space heater in the winter last year, my husband and I gave up and called our local HVAC supplier and had them come out to do an assessment for us. The heating and air conditioning technician suggested that we have a ductless mini-split system installed in the bonus room. That way, we wouldn’t have to have ventilation ducts installed, which is one of the most difficult parts of installing a new HVAC unit.
