I live in the south, and here there are no longer independently owned drug stores. Back in the 1980s when I was young, I had a job in an independent original drug store. At that store, there was an old storeroom in the back. l found out that at one time, that storeroom was absolutely the bathroom area. There was also a coffee fountain just like you see on the old movies, and out front, there was this old sign proudly proclaiming “air conditioning inside.” I thought that was so weird and odd, however someone told myself and others that were curious it was leftover from the original building… When the location first opened, there was no such thing as heating or cooling in a shop such as that, however, the owners were easily shrewd and as soon as they heard about getting air conditioning, they jumped at the opportunity. There was only 1 other drug store in the city, however they did not have a/c, and everyone wanted to go to the one with that new installed a/c. I do imagine that it would have been hot in there since they grilled burgers also at the old coffee fountain, however anyway, the sign was genuinely cute, plus they left it up even though the store contained air conditioning for at least 36 years and every other store used a/c as well. It was a reminder of how long they were a part of the community, though, plus the a/c sign was also just plain cute.
