When I was in college, I didn’t have a lot of choice whether or not to have a roommate. I did make a promise to myself that when college was done, I would never have a roommate again. I held true to that promise for several years. A couple months ago, I got a call from my best friend. I had known him since I was in high school, and he was in some trouble. His wife had thrown him out and he had nowhere to go. He told me that he needed someplace to stay for a while. He promised that as soon as things settled down at home, that he would be out. I was hesitant about saying yes, but he was my best friend. I gave him permission to hang out on my couch for a couple weeks. Now, he has been here for two months and I want my home back. More importantly, I want control of my heating system back. I offered him two weeks, he has taken over for two months now and with no sign of moving out. He eats all of my food. He makes big messes and he doesn’t clean them up. He sets the thermostat up high when I go to work. My energy bill doubled last month because of how high he sets the thermostat. I never have it this hot in my house. Now, I pay the bills, yet I am at the mercy of a heat greedy, rude friend. He needs to get out and/or leave my thermostat alone and pay some bills.
