My colleague and I have been teaching at the same elementary school for years. We started when we had both moved from out of state and have become great friends since. One of our greatest accomplishments was being able to raise enough money to install a new heating and air conditioning system in the school. The school is very small and is housed a building that was built in the 1960s. For the most part, the school is great, however, the old heating and air conditioning system was terrible. Often times, the air conditioner would blow out dust and luke warm air, making the conditions for both the teachers and students terrible. We all kept asking for repairs to be done to the AC. An HVAC team was called out and we were told that the system needed to be replaced. My coworker and I both knew that school did not have money for a new HVAC system, but we also knew the people of the community loved the school. So, we got to work. We spoke with several HVAC companies and found a company that was willing to do the install at a discount since we were at a school. With that information in mind, we had a carnival fundraiser. Setting up the fundraiser for the new heating and air conditioning unit was easy. The whole community pitched in, helping set up games and fun activities for adults and children alike. By the end of the night, we had surpassed our goal and during the spring break that year, the new HVAC system was installed.
