Growing up, my parents raised us to be very simple people. We always made sure we had every that we needed, but we did not live luxurious lives. We shared all of our toys and had many hand-me-down clothes from our older cousins. We didn’t mind most of the time. The only time that it bothered me was during the summer season. We didn’t have standard central cooling systems like all my friends did. We only have window air conditioning units in our bedrooms. These systems kept our bedrooms very cool at night. It really helped us sleep at night, but it didn’t help us during the day. We didn’t spend time in our bedrooms during the day; we were playing outside and in the living room during the day. When we were in the living room, we would be dying from the heat. It felt like the living room trapped heat and created a sauna. It made me crazy. I used to try to hide in my bedroom and blast the air conditioner to find some relief. My dad would get so upset with me. He tried to encourage me to get outside and enjoy the summer, but I wanted nothing to do with it. I just wanted to enjoy the cool air. My parents never understood why I felt this way, but I just couldn’t stand the summer weather. When I moved out of my parents’ house, the first thing I did was invest in central cooling in my new house. I didn’t want to relieve the heat of summer!
