We recently broke a record for the hottest temperature for that date in September. Considering the rest of the summer has been way below average temperature and well in excess of the average amount of rainfall, I guess we couldn’t complain about a broken record in September. I’m thinking that some of the stores forgot that it was still summer, because I walked into our local grocery store and I was hit with such a blast of heat that I thought I was going to pass out. It felt like someone had not only left the doors open, but they had turned the blast furnace on. I swear, it had to be at least one hundred twenty degrees in that store, because it was one hundred five outside. I heard someone complaining about the temperature in the store, and asking if they could turn the air conditioning on. I looked at the harried customer service rep who stood behind the counter, and I knew it wasn’t just a matter of turning the AC on. Her face was bright red and she was sweating quite profusely. She looked like she was about to faint from the heat. I asked her if she was okay and she told me that the air conditioning had quit running yesterday. Half of their workers had walked out and she was the only one up front. I saw she had a fan pointing at her, but I told her maybe the other half should walk out until the AC was fixed, and I left the store.
