Growing up, our parents raised us to be simple people – well, simple to please of course. We constantly made sure to have what every one of us needed, but there was no fancy living. We shared all of our toys and had many hand-me-down clothes from our older cousins, but we didn’t mind most of the time. The only time that it bothered me was while we lived in the summer, as we didn’t have usual central cooling systems like all our friends did. We only had window air conditioner units in our bedrooms, which kept our bedrooms chilly and cool at night. It really helped us sleep at night, but while the day marched on, these units felt useless. We didn’t spend time in our bedrooms while home in the day, obviously, so every one of us were playing outside. When we were in the kitchen, the group of us would be dying from the heat! It felt as though the kitchen trapped heat and created a sauna to sweat us out. It made me crazy! I used to try to hide in our bedroom and blast the a/c to find some relief, but dad would get so frustrated with me as a result. He tried to encourage me to get outside and enjoy the summer like the other kids, but I wanted nothing to do with it! I just wanted to enjoy the cool air alone. My parents never understood why I felt this way, but I just couldn’t take the summer weather. When I moved out of my parents’ house, the first thing I did was invest in central cooling in our new home. I wasn’t about to relieve the heat of summer!
